First Visit to Corpus Christi
As I sit here writing my first blog for “Way of the Camera” from my new home in Corpus Christi, it’s a little hard for me to believe that my very first visit here happened less than six months ago. After spending most of the past 20 years living in or near the Rocky Mountains, I ended last year knowing that I was ready for a change of scenery. I had never lived near the water before, so moving to someplace along the Gulf Coast would certainly be something new and different for me. I had already made my way down to Houston, but it was too much city for me and not close enough to the coast. Looking south, Corpus Christi seemed like it would be a better fit. Not only was it on the coast, but it was a much more manageable size for this country boy. And with a Texas A&M campus, naval base, museums, thriving tourism industry, and more here, I thought there would be plenty of fun things in the area to keep me busy.
In mid-January, I made the four-hour drive south and spent my first three days in Corpus Christi. The way I explore any new area is with my camera, so I spent most of that trip driving across Ocean Drive, walking along the seawall, and venturing into their downtown. On the first day the weather was overcast with light rain, which made for some moody and dramatic images. But for the second and third days the sun came out and I saw lots of blue skies. I spent almost all of my time in the areas around Shoreline Boulevard and North Beach. By the end of this trip, I still hadn’t really seen any other parts of town, but I didn’t need to at this point. I was already hooked.
Following that first trip, I made several more visits before finally moving here at the beginning of this month. I’ve taken some fantastic photos over the past few months and know that even more amazing photos are ahead. But these photos from that first expedition down here are still among my favorites.
